What is a rosary?
The Rosary is a traditional prayer of Catholics who seek to honor the Blessed Virgin. Originally it was made up of fifteen "mysteries" that evoked the joyful, painful, and glorious moments of the lives of Jesus and Mary. In 2002 St. John Paul II added the luminous mysteries which allow us to meditate on the public life of Jesus.
The rosary is also a religious object in the form of a necklace composed of threaded beads, to each of these beads corresponds a prayer to the Virgin Mary.
"All generations will call me Blessed." In fact, from the earliest times, the Blessed Virgin has been honored under the title of 'Mother of God'; the faithful take refuge under her protection, imploring her in all their dangers and needs. This cult finds its expression in the liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of and in Marian prayer, such as the Holy Rosary, "the compendium of the whole Gospel" as Paul VI liked to say.
In fact, the Rosary is the prayer that concentrates the special worship of which the Blessed Virgin is the object in the Church.
Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 971.
